Eating Out on a Cut: Indian Restaurant Survival Guide

2 min read

A cut that bans every dinner out dies in three weeks. You do not need to skip the restaurant; you need an ordering system.

The four ordering rules

  • Pick the tandoor: tandoori chicken, paneer tikka, fish tikka — high protein, cooked mostly dry.
  • Gravy is the calorie: butter chicken and paneer makhani are 60–70% oil and cream. Order gravies “less oil” or choose dry preparations.
  • Roti over naan: a tandoori roti runs ~100 kcal; a butter naan can triple that.
  • Rice by the katori: ask for steamed rice and stop at one portion; skip the biryani unless it IS the meal.

A safe order almost anywhere

Paneer/chicken tikka starter → dal tadka (light oil) → 2 tandoori roti → salad and raita. Roughly 600–750 kcal with 40g+ protein — a completely normal restaurant meal.

Buffets and parties

Walk the whole spread first, load half the plate with protein and salad, take dessert in one small serving and eat it slowly. One planned plate beats four guilty ones.

Bank calories, do not starve

Eating slightly lighter earlier in the day (not fasting) leaves 300–400 kcal of room for the evening. Our deficit guide shows the weekly math, and the builder sets your daily budget so nights out fit inside it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I eat out at an Indian restaurant while cutting?

Choose tandoori and grilled dishes over curries with cream or heavy gravy, pick roti over naan and butter naan, take dal over dishes finished with ghee, and ask for less oil. These swaps often halve the calories of a meal without changing the food you enjoy.

What are the highest calorie Indian restaurant dishes?

Butter chicken, paneer butter masala, biryani made with generous ghee, naan brushed with butter, and fried starters such as pakora and samosa. Cream, ghee and deep frying account for most of the excess.

Should I skip meals before eating out?

Reducing intake slightly earlier in the day is reasonable, but skipping meals entirely usually leads to overeating when you arrive. Keeping protein high across the day and moderating carbohydrate and fat works better.
